Yes, you can have your own biz web site

Recent surveys indicate how ardently small business owners look to deploy web sites. Porting daily chores to web based applications, besides simple presentations, advertising, or even e-commerce. But first a blink at the results (some of):

The survey sought to understand the challenges that small business owners face marketing their businesses online. Revealing highlights of the survey include:

– Almost half of the respondents (45%) ranked having a website as “very important” while (22%) stated that it was “extremely important.”
– A large percentage of respondents (66%) cited the cost of hiring a web designer or webmaster as a key barrier to owning a website. Among those who responded to the question, other key barriers included: Lack of technical knowledge (59%), finding and retaining a qualified web designer (43%), and the hassle and cost of retaining a web designer to manage and make updates to their sites (40%).
– 65% stated that their clients believed that larger-sized businesses had more resources and knowledge than they about how to better market their businesses online, yet almost half (46%) felt that having a website would help them effectively compete against larger-sized businesses.
– Respondents were split on the average budget their clients spent trying to acquire new customers. (42%) stated 5%; while (42%) stated 10%.
– More than half (57%) of ASBDC poll respondents ranked themselves as “somewhat” comfortable and knowledgeable in making online recommendations to clients; while (21%) responded as “very comfortable.” Only (6%) considered themselves “extremely comfortable.”

Now, make no mistake: there’s more to the web services (on-demand software) than the plain shiny web site. You can safely port your customer relationship management (CRM), your file servers (webDAV), and why not your accounting chores (ERP) online. Oh my, this mumbo jumbo talking… But fear not: I know Faye and Sissy—they speak your English and can break it down to Perl/PHP languages that run your web site. If you live in Alabama, around Huntsville, more or less, then calling these gals could be an answer to your headaches (hey, I’m talking strictly business here, web hosting and design, drafting, web apps and such, get the point?). Also good to have an eye over the Moonkah workplace—it’s painfully low cost but not cheap!

Georg first started with programming in 1981. Did some machine engineering between 1985 and 1990. Then wasted an entire decade on DTP (Desktop Publishing), pre-press and printing. Since 2000, Georg escaped the Gutenberg territory to focus on web sites development and on-demand software applications programming. Don’t tell Georg that software comes in a box…
